Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches.

Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply.

More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

And another thing, they call her Robinson Crusoe. ( That's the name they gave her on the mainland. )

The book was about a girl named Karana. She lived on the island by herself for 18 years. Aleuts came to the island and killed most of their men. The Aleuts really came to hunt otter, but became aggresive. Their chief was killed so they elected another one. He got into a canoe and went to the mainland. He sent a white men's ship to bring the Indians to the mainland. Karana's brother forgot his spear and went back for it. The ship began to leave. Karana dove into the sea and dropped her baskets because they were too heavy. She was able to get to the island safely. Then the next morning her brother died because the wild dogs killed him. Then she began to live by herself. She vowed she would get rid of the wild dogs. One day, she set fire outside of the wild dogs' lair. She was able to wound the wild dogs' leader. The wild dogs' leader slipped away. She found him in a clearing. Instead of killing him, she took him in and healed him. She fed him and named him Rontu. Sadly, one summer Rontu died. But she took his son in. She named him Rontu Aru which means ''Rontu's son.'' She met a Aleut girl and not long after that some missionaries came to the island. She went with them back to the mainland. While the rest you'll just have to find out by reading the book because I left some events out of this review.

I like all of the names, characters, and details.

The Island of the Blue Dolphins is about a girl named Karana. The Aleuts came to the island to hunt for otters. Since the Indian village did not agree with the Aleuts, the Aleuts killed most of the village's men. The village was afraid. The chief was killed so they elected a new chief. The chief got into a canoe and went to the mainland. He sent a white men's ship to the island.
