Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches.

Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply.

More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

i read it because i had to do a book report on it i thought it was good but the ending was sad because Rontu died

The book was about a girl that lives on a island by herself. Some enemy's she has to fight is stuff in the water like the devil fish and the wild dogs.I think the book was ok but that's my opinion.

I read this book for a book report. I like to read about how she made her house and her weapons. I also like to read about her animal friends. I think this book is very interesting.

island of the blue dolphins was a haunting, beautiful story.it is about a girl who is stuck on a island, now called San Nicolas and a secret navy base.she is stuck on this deserted island, first with her brother, then alone. Karana faces many problems, fighting the devilfish to the big tsunami like wave.her destiny is unclear, but she believes she can fight through with her friends.

it is queit a sad story

this book is so awesome!!!!!!if i was her age i would die in the first couple hours. i mean like think about it living all by yourself with only a wild dog as a pet that is so hard!
