Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!
This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.
Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

The One and Only Ivan is a beautiful and touching book. It is based on the true story of a gorilla named Ivan. In the beginning, the reader meets Ivan (a gorilla), Stella (an elephant), and Bob (a stray dog) in a mall where they live in their "domains." Soon, we find out that Ivan is an artist. He paints pictures for his owner at the mall to sell. In the middle, Ivan becomes more and more unsatisfied living in the mall. He yearns for the freedom of a large domain, and to live with other gorillas. In the end, Ivan must use creative problem solving in order to reach get what he wants (and what he wants for his friend, Ruby). I recommend this book because the characters are very believable. Also, it was easy for me to make personal connections and feel compassion for the animals in the story. I have already read this book twice and I plan to read it again!
so sad but still the best book ever! it is about a gorilla named Ivan who is trapped in a cage as a preformer for a abusive circus at a mall. he paints pictures and loves painting them. but he is sad and griefing because his best friend, an elephant died from a sickness. he then vows to protect a baby elephant named Ruby with the help of his human friend Julia and his dog friend, Bob. he needs to get out of this dirty, grimy, cramped circus and move into an awesome zoo, he just needs to find out how he can get him and Ruby and bob out.
Got a little slow at points, but the dog was my favorite character.
That book is so awesome
I absolutely love this book! I read it for battle of the books(long story) and it was AWESOME! I strongly recommend read this book if you haven't already!
I like reading this book because they put a lot of details I also like it because i just love
This book is the best most sad thing i have read it includes detail and stories and just enough moments that would make you cry (as it did to me lots of times!). It is about a gorilla named Ivan that wants to leave the zoo that he is trapped in meanwhile there is a elephant that needs help she is sick and dying. Ivan is willing to take the risk of getting out of the cramped zoo and into a bigger and better one!
This is a GREAT book! Everyone should read this, it is definitely worth it!
I so want to read this.
