Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

This book was simple but amazing. I think all readers should consider reading this book.

that was and awesome book but some times it got sad

It is a very kind ,great and amazing book it is about a gorilla who lives at a mall and it is really great because it is based on a true story.

this is such a good book to teach kids that they should not treat animals terribly and be cruel to them. my favorite part is when stella the elephant tells ivan the chimp ( i think he is a chimp) to take care of ruby the baby elephant when she dies. even though that is a sad part that is still my favorite part.

It's really just, wow. There's no word for it really! It was moving and very deep and heartfelt. Although deep, some parts are funny. Five stars, read now!!!

Ivan is a sad gorilla. Ivan is alone. Ivan is so sonice

This was the 2013 Newberry Award. I would highly recommend it to any animal lover. It is a beautiful story that captures the essence of deep and meaningful relationships between people and animals. There are good guys and bad guys in this book and you will love how the good trounces the bad and makes them look ridiculous!

It is based on a true story but the gorilla is talking! If you want a good book READ THIS NOW!
