This gripping story, written in sparse first-person, free-verse poems, is the compelling tale of Billie Jo's struggle to survive during the dust bowl years of the Depression. With stoic courage, she learns to cope with the loss of her mother and her grieving father's slow deterioration. There is hope at the end when Billie Jo's badly burned hands are healed, and she is able to play her beloved piano again. The 1998 Newbery Medal winner.

Out of the dust is a very good and intreging book but the book was very repetitive. Billie joe was a very tough but sassy little girl. She has to has to go through tough times but she could've delt with them better. She was a very worrisom of everything like people judgeing her and she handled it not well be hiding everything that happened to here.

I think this book is interesting and has a great plot. Its just that too many people died and that made me sad, (Not really, I really didn't care)

This book was so good and dramatic! With a lot of pain in the book, you can physically feel Billie Jo's feelings! Her pain and proud is so relatable! (of course, in modern ways) This book was so emotional and amazing! I didn't want to put it down! I would definitely recommend this book. Karen Hesse did such an amazing job on this story, and I wanted to read more from her afterwards. I loved this book! A+, Karen Hesse!

It was a very good book, it made you happy, sad, and it made you feel bad for the main characters at times. The ending was boring, i expected something completely different from what actually happened.

The book was very boring at first but throughout the book it got intresting and had you at the edge of your seat

This book is an emotional book with a girl that has gone through a tough situation. Her mother died and her baby brother did too. Long story short, this book is great and it is a pretty sad book.

The book Out of the Dust was a book that makes you have many different emotions. The book made me smile, cry, and laugh. The book was a very enjoyable book for my classmates and I. Billie Jo and pa become a lot closer with each other which is the best part of the book in my opinion.

The book was amazing it had you crying laughing but most importantly it made you think. Also the ending was kind of lame. There was a lot of unsolved questions. Such as what did Billie Jo do with Mad Dog? Also did Pa and Louise get to have a big wedding? The author should have answered these questions.
