This gripping story, written in sparse first-person, free-verse poems, is the compelling tale of Billie Jo's struggle to survive during the dust bowl years of the Depression. With stoic courage, she learns to cope with the loss of her mother and her grieving father's slow deterioration. There is hope at the end when Billie Jo's badly burned hands are healed, and she is able to play her beloved piano again. The 1998 Newbery Medal winner.

This book is a great book and has a lot of meaning a lot of people see the book and think they don't pick to read it because it was from the old times, but there is a lot of meaning to this book and is very interesting... except the end I was very disappointed on how the ending went, but besides that it was a great book and I suggest it for any kid to read.

This book fills young readers minds with all the troubles from our past as a county. It shows readers to always have hope in rough times. I personally liked this book, but i believe it should have more action because at times, it lost my attention at times.

This book is great because it tells you how hard her life was during the storm and the whole book was interesting.

Was a ahhh book if you were given a lot of work. Although, if you were going to read own your own it would b a great book. Lots of twists and turns that ended up exciting.

This book was an okay book. I was sad at some parts like when Billie Jo's mother and brother pass away. Some parts of the book are interesting, while others are okay and bad. Overall the book was good at some parts and bad in others are good.
