This is a heartwarming book about how this boy named Billy goes through a hunting adventure. Through his adventure, he learns unselfishness, love, and death. This book will bring you close to tears and you won't be sorry for it.
SPOILER ALERT!!! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS STORY, DO NOT READ! SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE!!! 3...2...1...Where the Red Fern Grows is a heart-melting story about two coon hounds, Little Ann the brains and Old Dan the brawn, that can't survive without each other. Billy, their determined trainer, lives on a farm and has little money, but that didn't stop him from getting TWO dogs. They were really expensive, of course! In the next two years, Billy saved...$50.00 for the hounds. Later he kept $10.00 because the price lowered down. He walked from the Ozarks to a town full of arrogant people. Billy rounds up his dogs and sets for home. He then conquers many obstacles like a "boy-fight", a mountain lion, enemy loss...you name it! This is the place I stopped at. Now comes another interesting plot: Billy is prepared for a coon hunting contest. (And a side note to the people that want to continue to read on later, see my following replies in the future.) Will he win? Will he lose? Will he face any more problems? Read WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS! In case you have finished the book, WATCH THE MOVIE! (To be continued...)
The ending is REALLY sad. Billy won the coon hunting contest, but a while later, Billy and his dogs faced a mountain lion. The dogs protected Billy but it ends up that Old Dan had his "inside-parts" out of his body! Unfortunately, Old Dan passed away. Wilson Rawls really gives good description, by the way...then Little Ann died with a broken and painful heart. Those two were like buddies. Hey! Ever know why the book's called "Where the Red Fern Grows"? At the end, red fern grew on top of the grave where the two dogs were buried.
Where the Red Fern Grows is a book a book we are reading in school. It is about a boy named Billy who has two hounds Little Ann and Old Dan. Billy enters a coon hunting contest. Will Billy get the gold cup? Will he be forgiven for the "accident"? Find out by reading Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.
I read this book in the fifth grade with the rest of my class. It is a very sad book so I would not recommend it to everyone. If you have ever lost a pet you will feel that soft spot come out in this book.
Even though it's sad, I recommend this book to EVERYBODY who is interested. Some sad parts come up but STILL!
This is my favorite book of all time! I love the lessons learned in this story about hard work, faith and love. I first read this book when I was in 5th grade, and I have read it to every class that I have taught. Keep your kleenex handy though! This book is a tearjerker! I highly recommend this book to boys or girls. You won't be disappointed!
