Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches.

Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply.

More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

This was a Tragic story about an amazing girl named Karana. She was left on and island for 18 years surviving, hunting, hiding and mourning. This island was attacked by the the Alutes for Russia. Many died, few survived. She was a survivor with her little brother and older sister. After tragic events she is left alone, on the island with only one friend the wild dog, Rontu. This was an amazing book! I love this writing style and will definitly read more!

This is the best story scott o'dell has written so far. I own and recomend this book, Hope every one likes this book! I have seen the movie too, and I almost cried when Karanna's father gets shot. The movie is great, but the book is better. I have even made a hut but following the stuff that she did!. This book is one of my faves and I hope you like it too. ♥ From awesomeperson24

I got this book from Borders in Freehold, a bookstore that's not there any more. I only went there one day- the last day it was going to be open. I'm so glad I got this book. It's about a girl who must learn to survive on her own without her tribe, and the only friends there were animals to her, since her brother died. It's based on a true story of a Native American girl on the Island of the Blue Dolphins.

this book was amazing it's about a girl and how her family has to move because a group of dangerous people want there land. Karana has a little brother that on the day the village is leaving is left on the island. Karana being brave jumps of the ship the village is leaving on, and goes to her brother. The ship leaves her and her brother. One day Karana's brother goes out and is killed by a pack of wild dogs. Well that's only part of the story the rest I won't spoil!
