Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

The book, The One and Only Ivan, is an emotional, inspirational and a humorous book that you will want to read again and again. The characters demonstrate friendship, protection, care and loyalty because they need each other to survive their lonely life locked in the Big Top Mall. There were unexpected twists and turns, so our class wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to these beloved animals. Ivan is truly one of a kind, and the fact that there really was a silverback gorilla named Ivan that lived a sad and lonely life, makes this book so interesting and unforgettable. Read this book to find out Ivan's journey and what happened to his friends, Stella, Ruby, Bob, and Julia. This book was a mighty success!

This book was a nice example of friendship and kindness. Ivan is a real gorilla, and this book focuses on friendships and how to treat animals. We feel the story is life changing because of how Ivan was locked up in a small cage with a painted jungle for 27 long years. With the help of the animals and Julia all working together, Ivan and Ruby's life changes and gets better. Bob is a tough little dog, but he also needs friends, too. The characters show determination and loyalty to help each other until the end. We loved this book, and we will always remember Ivan, the One and Only Mighty Silverback. He's the coolest gorilla ever!

The book, The One and Only Ivan, is based on a true story of a gorilla. Ivan is a silverback gorilla who spent 27 years of his life living at the Big Top Mall, which is a circus themed mall. Ivan was secluded from other animals of his own kind, and shared his years at the mall with other circus animals. The pivotal moment in the story comes when one of the animals experiences tragedy. This event changes Ivan's perspective, and his mission becomes fulfilling a promise. Will Ivan ever leave the Big Top Mall? Will he ever be reunited with other gorillas? Find the answers to these questions when you read, The One and Only Ivan! A story that pulls at your heart strings, but also keeps you laughing hysterically.

nice review!

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat because there are a lot of ups and downs like Stella dying but then Ruby coming to the mall and Ivan protecting her. It was hard to believe that humans made a terrible decision to keep animals locked and trapped in a small cage at a mall for 27 years. When they finally got out, it was a huge success for Ivan, Julia and Ruby. They worked together as a team for a great cause. This book represents friendship and compassion to do what is right, to honor promises, and to take care of each other until the end. Our class loved this book tons and tons! We will never forget Ivan, our mighty silverback!

I want to read this because it is based on Ivan, who lived at Zoo Atlanta. I believe it is told from Ivan's point of view too.

I love her books so much I need to read this so bad!

I decided to read it because it funny and it looked like it would interest me. It is a awesome book and it is really funny. It's also kinda sad. It's about a stray dog,2 elephants, and a gorilla!!

The first-"person" point of view is interesting; couldn't put it down. Watch the YouTube video of Ivan's last years at the Atlanta zoo AFTER you've read the book.

While I read this story about Ivan and his friends, I felt for all the animals that live in solitary. Is that what it would be like? The author's story and style of writing gripped at my heart. I couldn't the book down-read it in one day. Superb.
