Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

I love this book! It is so detailed, and I felt so bad for Ivan, even though he is a book character. Ruby is so cute! This book is so sad, but it is worth it because it has such a good ending! You must read this, even if you don't think you like sad books! If you like the book "the underneath" you will love this book!

read this book wow amazing. I cant belive that I read some thing so quickly but when you read something this good you cant stop reading!

This book is the first book that I can remember crying. Not because it was sad, it was because of the part where Ivan and Ruby were saying goodbye. OK, so this is the story: So, Ivan lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and he thinks he's the only silverback gorilla left in the world. Then, one day, while he is watching TV, he sees another Silverback. His only friends are Bob, the dog, and Stella, an elderly elephant. Their caretaker, Matt, realizes that business is going down. He gets Ruby, a baby elephant. Well, now Stella's foot is hurting, and she asks Ivan, one night before she goes to sleep if he can make sure that Ruby doesn't have the life that she had. Well, the next morning, Stella is dead. Ruby weeps and cries for the next couple of days, and she asks Ivan to remember when he was in the wild and to tell her about it. At first Ivan refuses, saying he doesn't remember(he has spent some of the past few years making himself forget it,) but then he softens up and tells Ruby. He decides that he needs to get Ruby to a zoo. he spends his nights painting with fingerpaints that the person who cleans the mall's daughter gave him. Night by night, he spells home out, and draws pictures of what he would imagine a zoo to be. Julia convinces her dad to put it up on the billboard, and one thing leads to another, and Ruby and Ivan are being shipped out to a zoo. This is a great book

That was an awesome review.
