You just can't keep a good girl down . . . unless you use the proper methods.
Piper McCloud can fly. Just like that. Easy as pie.
Sure, she hasn't mastered reverse propulsion and her turns are kind of sloppy, but she's real good at loop-the-loops.
Problem is, the good folk of Lowland County are afraid of Piper. And her ma's at her wit's end. So it seems only fitting that she leave her parents' farm to attend a top-secret, maximum-security school for kids with exceptional abilities.
School is great at first with a bunch of new friends whose skills range from super-strength to super-genius. (Plus all the homemade apple pie she can eat!) But Piper is special, even among the special. And there are consequences.
Consequences too dire to talk about. Too crazy to consider. And too dangerous to ignore.
At turns exhilarating and terrifying, Victoria Forester's debut novel has been praised by Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, as "the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men...Prepare to have your heart warmed." The Girl Who Could Fly is an unforgettable story of defiance and courage about an irrepressible heroine who can, who will, who must . . . fly.
This title has Common Core connections.
Praise for Victoria Forester and The Girl Who Could Fly:
"It's the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men. I was smiling the whole time (except for the part where I cried). I gave it to my mom, and I'm reading it to my kids―it's absolutely multigenerational. Prepare to have your heart warmed." Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga
"In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Piper McCloud, the late-in-life daughter of farmers...The story soars, just like Piper, with enough loop-de-loops to keep kids uncertain about what will come next....Best of all are the book's strong, lightly wrapped messages about friendship and authenticity and the difference between doing well and doing good."--Booklist, Starred Review
"Forester's disparate settings (down-home farm and futuristic ice-bunker institute) are unified by the rock-solid point of view and unpretentious diction… any child who has felt different will take strength from Piper's fight to be herself against the tide of family, church, and society."--The Horn Book Review
The Girl Who Could Fly is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

In chapter#4 everybody finds out that Piper can fly. Then Piper becomes famous. And then an agent comes to take Piper away. What I like about this chapter is when Piper is famous.
In chapter#2 Piper learns how to control her power. And she feels free when she flies in the air. What I like about this chapter is how she never stops trying.
In chapter#3 Piper makes a new friends. Soon after their friendship gets good they get into this huge argument that leads to there relationship ending. Rumors about their argument spread all through the school and ruined Pipers reputation. I like how in the beginning she is relieved she found a friend.
In chapter#1 -Piper tells her life story of growing up with a power to fly and how her parents are afraid of her. What I like about this chapter is how the flock of birds reminded her of her family.
Warning! This review may contain spoilers! There's this girl named Piper. She lives on a farm with her parents in a small town. And she can fly. Because of this, her parents homeschool her and she doesn't ever get to be around other people because. One day, Piper is allowed to attend the Fourth of July picnic that's held every year in her town. At this picnic, she flies and it freaks everyone out. The next day, a bunch of news crews show up at Piper's house. Also, a lady named Dr. Hellion shows up and tells Piper that she can help her. So Piper goes with Dr. Hellion. (sorry for such a poor description). What I thought of it: Well, it took me forever to finish this. I really couldn't get into it. I really couldn't stand the way Piper (and everyone else in the town she lived in) talked. I mean just because someone lives in a small town, doesn't mean they talk like that. Not to mention, pretty much every single person in the town (with the exception on Piper's family) names' were alliterated. Junie Jane, Sally Sue, Billy Bob, etc. Those are actual names of people in the book. The writing was ok, I guess, though it seemed a but lazy at times. They kept saying the same things over and over like the phrase "meaness and madness". There was only one chunk of the book that I actually liked, and it was towards the end. I just have to say, the ending was just plain stupid. Dr. Hellion, really never thought that they might revolt? Seriously...? Even though the ending was dumb (and seemingly lazily written) the last 2, 3, or 4 chapters were pretty much the only parts of the book that actually liked. I would've only given it one star, but because I liked certain parts earned it another star. Overall, it wasn't very good, but I've read worst books.
This book is AMAZING!!!! The first time I read it, it was good, but the second time, I LOVED it!!! It is about a girl, Piper McCloud who has the ability to fly, she is told not to fly,for her parents are worried people will see her. Then an organization, called I.N.S.A.N.E. comes and leads them to believe that they are trying to help people with unnatural powers, like Piper, but they are really trying to take their powers away from them. She gets sent away with them and later finds out the truth and rebels against I.N.S.A.N.E. I REALY LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERYONE!!!!!!!
