It's late summer 1793, and the streets of Philadelphia are abuzz with mosquitoes and rumors of fever. Down near the docks, many have taken ill, and the fatalities are mounting. Now they include Polly, the serving girl at the Cook Coffeehouse. But fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook doesn't get a moment to mourn the passing of her childhood playmate. New customers have overrun her family's coffee shop, located far from the mosquito-infested river, and Mattie's concerns of fever are all but overshadowed by dreams of growing her family's small business into a thriving enterprise. But when the fever begins to strike closer to home, Mattie's struggle to build a new life must give way to a new fight-the fight to stay alive.

the plot is amazing on e of the most amazing books i ever read. Laurie Hales Anderson is a genius. she is one of the most amazing authors i have ever read. When i read the book i felt like i was with Matilda, like i was in bush hill, like i was there when the robbers barged in. bottom line is the author is AMAZING!!!!!!!

One of THE most AMAZING books I've EVER read. The author, Laurie Halse Anderson, is now one of my favorite authors. This book, and her other book Chains, are the reason why I got into historical fiction. this book was suspenseful, and SPOILER ALERT, I refused to stop reading when Matilda was on the verge of DEATH. Overall, wonderfully written, in Anderson's signature style.

I was doing a reportr on malaria and yellow fever so I asked my teacher to help me. She showed me this book and I was like cool. S. went home and read it and when I was done I was like this book changed my life. It's so real and soo sad. I luv it!

This is one of my favorite books for the pre-teen age group. It has a great story with life lessons about determination and commitment to those you love. I am not usually one to read historical fiction, but this book is great.

This is an awesome book because it's so realistic! You should read it if you are interested in non fiction books
