In the tradition of Out of My Mind, Wonder, and Mockingbird, this is an intensely moving middle grade novel about being an outsider, coping with loss, and discovering the true meaning of family.

Willow Chance is a twelve-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds it comforting to count by 7s. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn't kept her from leading a quietly happy life . . . until now.

Suddenly Willow's world is tragically changed when her parents both die in a car crash, leaving her alone in a baffling world. The triumph of this book is that it is not a tragedy. This extraordinarily odd, but extraordinarily endearing, girl manages to push through her grief. Her journey to find a fascinatingly diverse and fully believable surrogate family is a joy and a revelation to read.

"In achingly beautiful prose, Holly Goldberg Sloan has written a delightful tale of transformation that's a celebration of life in all its wondrous, hilarious and confounding glory. Counting by 7s is a triumph."--Maria Semple, author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette

"Holly Goldberg Sloan writes about belonging in a way I've never quite seen in any other book. This is a gorgeous, funny, and heartwarming novel that I'll never forget."--John Corey Whaley, author of Where Things Come Back

"Willow Chance subtly drew me into her head and her life, so much so that I was holding my breath for her by the end. Holly Goldberg Sloan has created distinct characters who will stay with you long after you finish the book."--Sharon Creech, Newbery Award-winning author of Walk Two Moons

This book was pretty good. It was about a girl whose parents had died in a car crash. So, she moves in with her best friend's family. She learns some very valuable lessons from her guidance teacher, her friend's brother, and her new family

Counting by Sevens is an awesome book! My teacher started reading it in class but we didn't get to finish it before summer vacation. I looked for it at the library found it then read it and immediately loved it. It is kind of sad but a really great book.

Willow Chance is a "Miss Einstein", for her intelligence shines through. She is a different and unique girl who likes certain things, like nature. She enjoys “counting by sevens” and that’s a bit unusual. She is a special girl. C'mon, can you recite pi up to the seventh seven? But when her adoptive parents die in a car crash, the ones who really care about her, her world turns around. Her life is different as she struggles through the grief. Eventually, her life is ordinary once again. How? - You may ask. To find out, read Counting by Sevens!

Willow is different. she is highly interested in medical disorders and botany. At times her adopted parents are the only ones who get her. But, later her parents are killed in a car crash. Maria Semple said: counting by 7's is a triumph. How will Willow triumph?

This book is about a girl named Willow. Willow is what you might call . . . different. She doesn't mind being different. But when her parents are in a car accident, Willow's entire world is flipped upside-down. Watch as Willow reconnects with the world through her - admittedly unusual - new friends.

I enjoyed this book. It was more of a stop and think about it type book rather than an action packed can't put it down book. I like to think about and understand the way other people think and view the world.

It is about a girl named Willow Chance whose parents have died. I didn't understand the rest of this book because it was confusing and very boring.

This is such a good book. It is about a girl named Willow she has a total normal girl expect for that fact that she diagnoses medical diseases. Until her parents become dead at the same time. This is a heart warning book on how she is surviving the world

I just love this book. Im glad Mai Nyugen decided to take her in. They are so nice. I felt deeply moved when I read this. It is just really good.

LOVE this book. It is about a girl that is adopted, but she is smart, and has a habit of counting by sevens, and she makes friends with these Vietnam children. But then, the girl's adopted parents die in a car crash. So then, the friends take her in, and from then on, they go to school together, and a bond forms between them.
