Recalling the fiction of Harper Lee and Carson McCullers, here is a funny, poignant, and utterly genuine first novel from a major new talent.
The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket--and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar.Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship--and forgiveness--can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm.

This story is about a girl named Opal who adopted a dog named Winn-Dixie named after the store where Opal found him making a mess. They end being best friends. They has to work together to live together. It is a sad, funny, fun, and exciting book.
I really love this book!! I read it two years ago in third grade. A brief little reflection: There's a girl and she finds a dog. She keeps him and they become really close. My class read it all together. It was a very well-thought book. It was also interesting and intense. When I saw this book, I thought I was going to like it. I was right!! I more than liked it... I loved it!! The characters have different personalities ( which I absolutely ENJOY!!!!!). It was a friend to friend kind a book. A book that has two best-friends. Everyone who likes those books will enjoy this one. I do recommend this to whoever is interested!! Enjoy reading!!

I read this in my class room
A very good book. it's sweet and sometimes disappointing but I recommend it.
I love this book when we were about to read this book I was so excited. When Opal was at the the WD store the dog Winn Dixie had destroy the whole store and when the Dewberry boys kept telling Opal that Gloria their neighbor that she is a witch. Also, this book is funny because Opal kept calling the Dewberry boys bald headed babies because they called Gloria a witch and when she went to church and Winn Dixie started howling outside and Opal brought him in to church. When he had caught the mouse and didn't kill it.Also when Opal was at the library and Ms.Franny the libraran had thought Winn Dixie was a bear. Also, when there was a thunderstorm Winn Dixie had chased around the house and knocked down her dad.
I think this book is sad.The book is sad because Opal lost her mom and don't know anything about her, until Opal's dad told her. Opal about her dad.Opal found a dog in the store named Winn Dixie. So Opal named the dog Winn Dixie, because dog was in the store Winn Dixie. Winn Dixie the dog helped Opal to make friends.Since the dog knew how to smile. At first, the Dewberry boys were not friends with Opal until Winn Dixie helped her.Sweetie pie Thomas was everybody's friend. When Opal met Odis she was surprised. He went to jail but it did not look like it.He was very peaceful. He took care of the animals very well.He let them out and played a song for them.He let them out because he did not want them to feel like they were in jail.He did that because he was once in jail and I bet he did not like it.Opal worked for him to get money to buy a dog collar for Winn Dixie. At the end was the sad part. The town was having a party at Glories Dumps house for a get together.Opal lost winn dixie in the street because,it was a stormy night and it was thunder included. Winn Dixie got scared of the thunder so he ran off.Opal went to find Winn Dixie with her dad. When in the middle of finding Winn Dixie, Opal and her dad had a argument about finding Winn Dixie and about,Opal's mom. They gave up and went back to Glories Dumps house. There they fount Winn Dixie
