Set in Scotland in 1751 (just a few years after the second Jacobite rebellion had been defeated in 1746) this is more of the story of David Balfour. The first part of his story is told in ‘Kidnapped’. This books deals with his troubles involving James Stewart of the Glen, the Lord Advocate, and Catriona, the daughter of James More.

First published in book form in 1893, the text has since been only very lightly revised.

This text of this edition is based on the Cassell 1893 edition, and has been carefully compared with the Cassell 1885 and other editions to catch any proper corrections. The spelling of some words has been changed to be the same as used in the 1895 ‘Edinburgh’ edition of ‘Kidnapped’, which was used as the basis for Durrant Publishing's edition of that book.

Hyperlinks are provided in text to many additional glossary entries for archaic and/or Scots words, in addition to the small number of footnotes made by the author himself.

The 17 illustrations are from the 1928 Macmillan Illustrated Pocket Classics edition and are by Charles E. Brock.

Great care has been taken in formatting the text for the Kindle, with proper typography (quotes, dashes, italics, small-caps, indents) and Kindle features (starting position, table of contents link, cover link).
